Coaching at Team 402
At Team 402, we believe great coaches are one of the most important investments we can make in the development of our players and the long term strength of our club. Our coaches dedicate countless hours to training, mentoring, communication, continuing education, and creating positive experiences for young athletes and families. Because of that, we believe it is important to compensate coaches in a way that is fair, consistent, and transparent.
The Team 402 Coach Pay Matrix was developed to clearly outline how coaching compensation is determined across the club. Rather than relying on subjective negotiations or inconsistent pay structures, this model uses measurable factors such as coaching licenses, experience, continuing education, and years of service within Team 402. Our goal is to provide clarity for coaches and families alike while also encouraging professional growth, long-term commitment, and continued investment in player development.

Education & Licensing Philosophy
At Team 402, we recognize that coaching licenses and certificates alone do not make great coaches. The qualities that matter most — leadership, character, communication, care for players, and the ability to inspire growth — cannot simply be earned through a course or credential.
At the same time, we strongly value participation in group learning environments and nationally recognized coaching education programs. Continuing education helps strengthen the broader soccer community, encourages collaboration among coaches, and demonstrates respect for the game’s evolving best practices.
We believe the best teachers, mentors, and coaches are lifelong learners. Great coaches are always interested in improving their own knowledge, refining their methods, and growing in their understanding of both the sport and the people they serve.
For that reason, Team 402 requires all coaches to hold a United States Soccer Grassroots License at a minimum, or to demonstrate a willingness to work toward obtaining that license within their first year of coaching with the club.
To support coach development, Team 402 will reimburse coaches for the cost of approved licensing courses and certifications upon successful completion, provided the course or program receives prior organizational approval. Our goal is not simply to collect licenses, but to build a culture of professionalism and service to young athletes and their families.
